This June 1st, Triangle area residents will have the opportunity to learn the basics of calligraphy from Oblique Pen artist Jessica Yee. Jessica’s work has graced wedding invitations, love letters, birth announcements, keepsake documents and more across the Triangle and beyond. This unique opportunity, a special 12-hour class, will teach students the basics of calligraphy with plenty of in-classroom practice.

Offered through the Wake County Public Schools Lifelong Learning program, the non-credit classes are open to those 16 years of age and older. Calligraphy 101 will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday evenings beginning June 1 at Sanderson High School in Raleigh.

The Oblique Pen in Cary offers the key highlights of Calligraphy 101:

  • Calligraphy tools: Students will learn about paper, ink and the pens used in calligraphy. They will learn how to care for and adjust the pen holder, plus practice pen and nib control.
  • Background: The class will provide an introduction to the beautiful vintage art of calligraphy, including some the history of the art, which stretches back thousands of years. Expect to learn about how words are constructed and formation of letters, plus variations.
  • Alphabet styles: Three calligraphy styles will be taught – italic, uncial and copperplate. Students will be given exercises and practice sheets. With the artist close at hand, aspiring calligraphers will be able to ask questions and get immediate feedback on their technique.
  • Professional instructor: Instructor Jessica Yee from The Oblique Pen enjoys teaching others and sharing her love of calligraphy. As she explains, “My love of the art is your gain because I will carefully train you to script beautiful letters. You can use your new found talent to make any special occasion envelope, menu, table card, and more, an artistic expression of calligraphic script.”
  • Instruction time: Each class is two hours long, providing sufficient time to learn and practice the various styles. Students will leave each evening with an understanding of that week’s style, practice sheets and confidence to continue practicing at home.

Contact The Oblique Pen today or register online at Lifelong Learning for Calligraphy 101 and get ready to add style and individuality to letters, invitations, thank you notes and a wide variety of occasions.

Calligraphy is both fun and an art. Give this class a chance and enjoy the experience.
